Game Notes

Westover ends Thomson's year again
Doubly upsetting

- McDuffie Mirror

THOMSON --- Three years ago, the Westover Patriots came into The Brickyard and upset the Thomson Bulldogs in the opening round of the state playoffs.

A group of Westover defenders converge on Thomson punter Phillip Anderson after he covered a blocked punt in the end zone.

That wasn't lost on either team Friday night.

"To be honest with you, we didn't like that thought," Westover coach Jeff Caldwell said. "We came in here 4-6, I think, and they didn't take us seriously. We knew they would remember that loss."

Even if the 2007 version of the Bulldogs did remember , it wasn't enough. The Westover defense held off a late Thomson drive that ended 28-yards short to pull off a 15-13, dÃjà vu victory to oust the Bulldogs from the first round, once again.

"Our defense played exceptional tonight," Caldwell said. "It has been battered and bruised all year, but they were outstanding."

Not much but good, hard-nosed defense from both squads could be seen in the first half. Thomson's second drive featured big runs from James Bonner, Kwynta Brown and Jeremy McGahee that took the Bulldogs to the 5-yard line.

But on fourth-and-goal, Thomson coach Luther Welsh decided to go for a touchdown, and McGahee was stopped for no gain.

On Westover's ensuing drive, a 46-yard reception by Kenji Breedlove put the Patriots within striking distance, but they ended up punting to start the second quarter. Then Thomson stalled and was forced to punt from its own end zone.

Several Westover defenders broke through the Thomson line and blocked Phillip Anderson's punt into the end zone for a safety after Anderson fell on the kick. The Patriots took the 2-0 lead with 8:21 to go in the first half and kept going into the locker room.

The Patriots scored twice on passes in the second half, the first a 62-yard catch by tight end Jason Jones, and the second a 29-yard reception by tailback Gregory Green.

Quarterback Brandon Lee ended 11-for-17 with 195 passing yards.

Thomson's two second-half touchdowns came at the hands of quarterback Brandon Turman. Receiver Darius Eubanks pulled down a 30-yard Turman pass to come within three points of Westover with 7:38 left in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs briefly took the lead with 10:13 left in the game on a 15-yard Turman run. Then after the Patriots passed their way to the lead with 8:12 remaining, Thomson couldn't find the end zone.

"All I can say is we just didn't get it done, and it cost us," Thomson offensive lineman Bob Brunson said.

The Bulldogs' big guns, Bonner and Brown, ended with 66 and 64 rushing yards, respectively. As a team, Thomson managed 213 yards on 53 carries.
